Tom left Harrow School in 1986, and successfully completed
an honours degree in biochemistry and a master's degree in developmental
psychology at Edinburgh University. Whilst studying, he worked
all over the world with over thirty children as a private tutor
for the educational consultants Gabbitas of Piccadilly. Most
of these children had been predicted either a fail at Common
Entrance or a low grade at GCSE and A level. All his Common
Entrance candidates passed to their school of first choice and
only A grades were achieved at GCSE and A level.
Drawing on this experience Tom began to formulate the theories
and techniques which all our tutors use today. The most important
of these being that with confidence, everything is achievable.
Tom's master's thesis was written on the effect of stress on
children's examination results which allowed him to examine
in detail the most efficient way of passing examinations for
different character types.
On graduating in 1990, Tom accepted a position as a corporate
financier with Barclays de Zoete Wedd. He also established The
Tutors Group in 1990 with the co-operation of Gabbitas and fully
sanctioned by BZW. He left BZW in 1994 to concentrate on expanding
The Tutors Group to include educational assessments and schools
advice and placement for both UK and overseas parents.
Tom is currently writing a book on a global theory of education
to reconcile child centred learning techniques with passing
examinations.
